Reading practice with Leseflitzi

What does Leseflitzi do?

• Careful reading: your child reads a short text aloud. Leseflitzi listens and shows which words already went well.
• Hard words: long words are split into coloured syllables (Win·ter·schlaf), read aloud normally and slowly, then repeated by your child.
• Fluent reading: a short passage is read three times, and your child sees it getting easier each time.
• Understanding: questions about the text, like at school: finding information, understanding words, the order of events, and thinking along.

Who is it for?

• Children learning to read German who still read slowly or hesitantly.
• Parents who speak little or no German: Leseflitzi reads difficult words aloud and shows clearly what to practise.
• Over 40 short, child-friendly texts in four levels – stories, simple non-fiction, and also recipes, invitations and timetables. The level adapts to your child.

Reading comprehension and ÉpStan

• In cycle 3.1, Luxembourg’s standardised tests (ÉpStan) assess, among other things, German reading comprehension: finding information in a text and understanding connections – in stories, simple non-fiction and texts such as recipes or instructions.
• Leseflitzi practises exactly these skills with questions in the same style. Leseflitzi is not an official service of the Ministry of Education, and the exercises are not real test items.

Tips for practising

• Short and regular: 10–15 minutes a day helps more than one long session at the weekend.
• Read the same text again: repeated reading makes children faster and more confident.
• Praise effort, not just speed. Reading accurately and understanding matter more than reading fast.
• Stop while it’s still fun: it’s better to end on a success.
• Read for fun too: comics, library books or magazines your child chooses.
